Apple is reportedly in the testing phase of a groundbreaking 200MP periscope telephoto camera, a move that could bring the company closer to the advanced camera technology currently seen in leading Android devices. This development comes in the wake of several Chinese smartphone manufacturers who have already integrated 200MP telephoto cameras into their flagship models.

While Samsung has firmly established a presence with high-resolution 200MP main cameras, various Chinese brands, including vivo, HONOR, OPPO, and Xiaomi, have been pioneers in utilizing these powerful sensors for telephoto capabilities. This shift in technology signifies a major leap in camera resolution, allowing for enhanced photographic detail and versatility.

Recent leaks indicate that Apple is not only exploring the possibility of a 200MP main camera but may also be considering the introduction of a 200MP periscope lens. This information comes from a leaker known as Digital Chat Station, who recently shared this news on social media platform Weibo.

However, despite the excitement surrounding this potential upgrade, it appears that Apple users may need to wait several years before seeing this technology in action. According to the leaker, the first iPhone model featuring a 200MP telephoto camera might not be released until 2028, which would give Android manufacturers an extended head start in this area.

The vivo X100 Ultra was the first smartphone to showcase a 200MP telephoto camera back in 2024, with other brands like OPPO and Xiaomi quickly following suit. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra notably features a 200MP variable telephoto camera, further illustrating how these high-resolution sensors are becoming a staple among Android devices.

For iPhone users, the introduction of a 200MP telephoto camera could offer significant advantages. This advanced sensor design enables lossless zoom capabilities, which greatly enhances long-range photography. For instance, OPPO claims that its Find X9 Pro's 200MP 3x telephoto camera can achieve approximately 13x lossless-resolution shots, while practical tests have shown that many of these devices can still deliver impressive quality at 10x zoom. Additionally, numerous models allow for full-resolution 200MP captures via their telephoto lenses, providing ample detail for cropping and post-processing without compromising image quality.

Interestingly, this is not the first indication of Apple’s interest in 200MP camera technology. Previous reports have suggested that Apple has been testing a 200MP main camera, specifically a 1/1.12-inch sensor that closely resembles the capabilities of the Sony LYT-901 sensor. The latest information raises questions about whether Apple is shifting its focus from a 200MP main camera to a telephoto variant. However, insights from the same leaker indicate that Apple may actually debut the 200MP main camera first, followed by a model featuring the telephoto camera, suggesting that the iPhone 20 series could potentially incorporate two 200MP cameras, similar to the offerings of OPPO and vivo.

In conclusion, while Apple’s exploration of a 200MP periscope telephoto camera signals a promising shift in its camera technology, customers may have to exercise patience as the company gears up for a future where such innovations become standard in their product lineup. For now, Android manufacturers continue to lead the charge with their advanced camera systems, setting a benchmark that Apple aims to meet or exceed in the coming years.
