Salesforce's recent event in San Francisco, hosted by CEO Marc Benioff, showcased the most ambitious transformation of Slack since its acquisition. The introduction of over 30 new AI-powered features for Slackbot aims to redefine how users interact with AI agents, enterprise applications, and each other within a unified interface. This announcement builds on a previous update from January 2026, which introduced email drafting, meeting scheduling, and inbox searching capabilities, but the March enhancements significantly expand Slackbot's functionality.

Overview of the New Features

The centerpiece of this update is the introduction of reusable AI skills. Users can create specific workflows, such as 'summarise this campaign brief' or 'generate a budget plan for this event,' and save them as named skills. Slackbot will then recognize these tasks and offer to execute them automatically, pulling relevant information from connected channels, applications, and data sources without requiring manual configuration each time. This feature addresses the growing demand for AI to handle repetitive cognitive tasks in enterprise software.

Another key feature is Meeting Intelligence, which allows Slackbot to listen to calls on platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, or Slack Huddles by accessing a user's desktop audio. It not only transcribes conversations but also identifies decisions made, assigns action items, and provides structured summaries at the end of each call. This desktop-based functionality extends Slackbot's capabilities beyond its application, monitoring user activity and providing proactive suggestions and follow-ups. However, this feature raises privacy concerns, as it requires users to grant the AI persistent visibility into their computer activities.

Slack is also launching a native CRM for small businesses directly integrated into the chat interface. Slackbot can read channels to identify when deals are mentioned or when new contacts are introduced, updating records automatically. Companies that outgrow this lightweight CRM can transition seamlessly to the full Salesforce CRM without the need to rebuild their data. Furthermore, Slackbot now acts as a Model Context Protocol client, enabling it to connect and coordinate with any external service registered with an MCP server through Slack's manifest, which currently includes platforms like Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Notion, and ServiceNow, among others.

Technology Behind the Features

All new capabilities of Slackbot are powered by Anthropic's Claude. Salesforce selected Claude as its AI provider because it was the only one meeting FedRAMP Moderate certification requirements, which are crucial for operating in regulated industries such as government and healthcare. This partnership significantly enhances the visibility of Claude within major productivity platforms, and with nearly one million weekly active users, Slackbot's user base is set to expand further due to the new pricing and bundling strategies.

Strategic Context and Leadership Changes

The March 31 event highlighted the importance of Slack's transformation within Salesforce's broader strategy. This comes in the wake of leadership changes, particularly the departure of Denise Dresser, Slack's CEO, to become OpenAI's first chief revenue officer in December 2025. Rob Seaman, Slack's former chief product officer, has stepped in as interim CEO, navigating the company through this pivotal transition while facing competition from emerging AI solutions.

Competing with Microsoft

The release of these new features is also a strategic response to Microsoft's advancements in integrating AI across its 365 productivity suite, embedding the Copilot feature into various apps. Slack's approach emphasizes a communication-first interface with comprehensive enterprise integration, arguing that this model is more effective for AI agents than a document-centric approach. The introduction of 30 new capabilities strengthens this position.

Pricing and Availability

Slackbot is included at no extra cost in Business+ and Enterprise+ plans, with a limited version rolling out for free and Pro users in April 2026. A significant change is expected this summer when all new Salesforce customers will have Slack provisioned and AI-enabled from the start. This bundling strategy alleviates the need for buyers to consider purchasing an additional AI layer, as it will be integrated with the CRM they have already acquired.

As enterprises increasingly expect AI tools to meet stringent security and compliance standards, Slack's decision to base its new system on a FedRAMP-certified model directly addresses these concerns. However, whether this will be enough to sway customers who have already committed to Microsoft 365 remains to be seen. The March 31 event underscored Salesforce's commitment to making Slackbot a central component of its product strategy moving forward.
